Fine Dinning for a Zombie

May 24th, 2013 | by Penguin Prince
Posted In: Blog

Lets face it. 99% of us may become zombies. Hopefully that made up number is wrong but really people are going to start eating brains and there’s really nothing you can do about it.

So why don’t you start getting used to the taste now? Below I have 4 recipes for brains that are actually consumed by humans every day. Dig in.

NOTE: We do not condone the eating of human brain, please use lamb, calve, pig, goat, or whatever the recipe calls for.

HEALTH WARNING:

Brain consumption can result in contracting fatal transmissible spongiform encephalopathies such as Variant Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease and other prion diseases in humans and mad cow disease in cattle. It is also well known in the hunting community that the brains of North American wild animals should not be consumed, due to the risk of chronic wasting disease. (Copied and abbreviated from Wikipedia)

If you decide to use these recipes it’s AT YOUR OWN RISK. Please cook all meats and other ingredients to proper temperatures and according to recipe.

¼ tsp. salt ● 2 egg yolks ● 1 tbsp. melted butter ● 1 tsp. lemon rind ● ½ c. milk

2 stiffly beaten egg whites ● Lard for deep frying

Directions –

Soak brains in cold acidulated water (1 qt. water and 1 tbsp. vinegar) for about 3 hours. Skin them and soak in lukewarm water to free them from all traces of blood.

Firm the brains by again blanching in acidulated water to cover for about 20 min. (DO NOT BOIL)

Dry brains and pull into small pieces.

Sift flour, baking powder and salt. Beat egg yolks and blend dry ingredients into them. Beat in 1 tbsp. melted butter and 1 tsp. lemon rind (optional) and ½ c. milk.

Beat until stiff but not dry, 2 egg whites. Fold them into batter.

Add brains then fry in hot fat (lard) until golden on both sides. Dry on paper towel.

Everybody likes T Shirt Fighting! (woo… ya!)

May 17th, 2013 | by Penguin Prince
Posted In: Blog

The zombie apocalypse is no place for the slow thinkers. Your going to have to use every resource available to you to survive. You may get into a situation where you have to fight some zed and be caught without your gun/hatchet/machete/katana/whatever to defend yourself. It’s just you and the zed, better learn to improvise. I love coming up with ways to turn everyday objects into zombie defense tools, but imagine you have nothing but the shirt on your back to defend yourself with… challenge accepted.

When fighting zombies one would not think to remove their clothing to get out of a sticky situation, however if you know how to use it, a shirt could be a good last line of defense. Check out this Youtube video to see some self defense moves you can use to incapacitate an attacker.

Now you might say “the zombies won’t be punching me.” No, but traditionally they have their arms stretched out giving you the same opportunity. However this is going to be slightly ineffective if you haven’t practiced this over and over again.

Better idea, take your shirt and put some rocks on one end. Next tie the shirt up so that the rocks won’t fall out. Now you can whip your shirt like a flail as an improvised weapon.

Don’t have the time to waste? Here’s another idea. Hold your shirt open in front of you between both hands. Next run at the zombie with the shirt at face level and wrap the shirt around its head. Duck under it’s arms and swing around to it’s back. You now have an effective fulcrum point to pull the zombie down, smash it’s head on a rock, boot stomp it, etc. It’s not the safest and requires nerves of steel but it’s safer than fighting it hand to hand.

Do you have any other ideas on how you can use clothing as a zombie weapon? Post your comments below or email me at penguinprince@grimcrew.com. Don’t forget you can also visit us on Facebook for more paranormal goodness!

Surviving the Zombie/Human Apocalypse

May 10th, 2013 | by Penguin Prince
Posted In: Blog

I talk a lot in these zombie blogs about protection from the zombies, but a lot of surviving the apocalypse is going to be about surviving from your fellow man. As we all know, people suck. People now are a bunch of jack asses who would just as soon step on you as walk over you. Take away social structure and there is nothing preventing them from getting exactly what they want no matter what they have to do.

And admit it, you would do the same.

So how do you protect yourself from the not so zombie attackers? You have three options. You can go on the run, never staying around long enough to let someone else get the best of you. You could become the fat cat, you know the biggest bully who is so powerful no one would dream of messing with him (good luck with that). Or you can hide. You’re already hiding from zombies, why not hide from everyone else too?

It’s instinctual for us as a human race to hide in the bushes and only come out or attack when we are at the advantage. Naturally this is because we don’t have a lot of natural armor, like a rhino, or natural weapons, like a bear or lion. So as a race we have always hidden in caves or in the bushes until our prey had made a mistake and left itself vulnerable to our pitiful weapons. We can apply the same principles here too.

Take a look at some of these awesome camouflaged dwellings. From 100 yards out, you wouldn’t know the dwelling was around at all.

Hidden partial underground and well camouflaged, you would have to be right in front of the entrance to see it.

I kind of like this idea. Make the house a decoy and use an under ground bunker as your dwelling.  You could make the visible part of your home undesirable for squatters or scavengers by making it look derelict  and unsafe.{2}

Even better hidden than the previous stone home. You would litterally have to be facing the window and standing right in front of it to spot it! {3}

This is another one not noticeable from the other side, but this lets in more natural light. {5}

Some methods of deterrence would be to make it insanely difficult to get to you. Although this also makes it difficult to leave for supplies as well.

Hidden in plain site. Camouflage from the clouds and inaccessible. Win Win! {6}

Hidden on one side by trees, the other, well they had better have a good bullet proof boat! {7}

If you decide to do this, make sure you keep your trail marked map, and watch for zombies that get trapped in the maze. Although the smart thing would be to have a hidden underground passage allowing you quick entrance and exit. {8}

Zombie Bite Mark

May 3rd, 2013 | by Penguin Prince
Posted In: Blog

Sometimes with big conventions I like to go a little bit zombie on people. Unfortunately I don’t know how to do makeup. I have a very gracious friend who has helped in the past, but I decided that I would like to learn how to do it myself in case she’s not around the next time I want to zombie up. A quick YouTube search later and I found this great tutorial.

Thank you Johnathan Ziegler for sharing your stage makeup techniques with us. By far that’s one of the best bite marks I’ve seen. I love how it’s blended in so naturally. A lot of tutorials require extensive work for looks that stand away from your skin, where as this one looks more realistically a part of your skin. My question however is how well will it hold up? My last convention that I dressed up at , my bite marks, woulnds, blisters and warts started to rub off throughout the day. Anyone know of a  good makup to use that will not rub away so easily? Or do you have a technique that provides a longer lasting look? Please share your comments below, and/or email ma at penguinprince@grimcrew.com. Zombies! Run!

April 26th, 2013 | by Penguin Prince
Posted In: Blog

I realized early in my training I would need help with my 5k in October. So I picked up the highly rated app “Zombies! Run!” hoping it would give me an entertaining run. I was not disappointed.

“Zombies! Run! takes a zombie story line and mixes it with your own sound track. You take the role of a runner and it’s your job to risk your neck to get much needed supplies for the town. How well you do determines the supplies you pick up, and at the end you decide how the town will use the supplies. As you allocate the resources the buildings level up. I haven’t gotten far enough to find out if this gives you any advantages in the game section later or not but I suppose we will see.

There are various settings you can use to adjust the game to your level. You can select if you want a ½ hour work out or go for the grueling long hall of an hour run. If you want something in-between, keep running after the story and bonus content plays for you as you jog without the risk of the undead eating you. You can also decide on tracking Kilometers or miles, and if you actually want to hear moaning zombies chase you as you run (opt out if you’re a wussy). You can check out more features of the game at www.zombiesrungame.com

So the question lies, what’s going to be on your running sound track? 5 songs make up a good break up of the story for ½ hour runs, so here are my 5.

  1. Until The End – Breaking Benjamin (when this comes on as the last song it gives me that much needed motivation to finish strong.
  2. Zombie Dance – Escape The Fate
  3. Zombie Girl – Secretions
  4. Zombie Me – No More Kings
  5. Still Alive (Featuring Sara Quin) – Jonathan Coulton (Sort of a zombie song about dead computers coming back to life, so it counts)

Let me know your soundtrack or suggestions in the comments section. You can also email me your comments at penguinprince@grimcrew.com. Don’t forget to visit us on Facebook, and Google +!

Getting Fit for the Zombie Apocalypse

April 19th, 2013 | by Penguin Prince
Posted In: Blog

WARNING SHAMELESS PLUG IMMINENT…

This weekend is our first and biggest show of the year. Awesome Con DC. Just as a last minute reminder, you can still get tickets online at awesomecondc.com. Tickets will still be available at the door but buying them in advance will probably be a shorter line. And you will want to get in early if you want to catch the Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse 101 panel hosted by yours truly. Show starts at 12 PM on Saturday. I have been told by good sources that the number of attendees to this convention is massive, so if you want a seat get there early!

AND NOW BACK TO OUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED BLOG…

When people think of zombie apocalypse preparation they think of supplies, safe houses, weapons, etc. Not everyone thinks about being in shape. Hopefully, you already are already fit and you have nothing to worry about. If you’re like me however, you could stand to lose a few pounds.

This is NOT how I'm losing the weight. {1}

Yea I want to be a loser, what’s it to you? {1}

I made a resolution to get in shape. I am proud to say with the help of my friends I am on my way there. We changed eating habits. We eat more vegetables, less meat (leaner too), and watch our portions. I haven’t had McDonalds in 3 months. I am proud to say I have lost over 40 lbs.

But I realize this is not enough. I want to be in great physical condition as well. For that I’m making the next life change by exercising regularly. How? I’ll tell you that next week (let’s just say I have an app review to do that’s LONG overdue).  But this is where I’m turning to my readers for help.

To motivate me to keep up a good workout schedule I have decided to enter my first 5K race. But you know me, being the zombie freak I am I can’t just run ANY race. I signed up for Run For Your Lives. My event will be taking place on October 5th. I have signed up for the 8:00 AM wave and I want as many Dead Future fans as I can get to join me.

If you want to join, head on over to www.runforyourlives.com and sign yourself up for the Maryland Race on October 5th. When you sign up, make sure you use the team name Dead Futureto join my cause. Then join me at the starting line at 8:00 AM to have one hell of a good time! If you can’t run for whatever reason, or you get into a different wave, meet me afterwards at the Apocalypse Party for great music, great food, and an awesome time sharing awesome stories of the run!

If you have any questions feel free to email me at penguinprince@grimcrew.com. I will also be posting my updates on our Facebook, and Google + pages. I’ll see you there!

Better Zombie Protection from SimpliSafe

April 10th, 2013 | by Penguin Prince
Posted In: Blog

A reader shared with me an April Fool’s joke his company put on their website which inspired this post. Check it out the joke here.

Even though this is a gag, I realized how useful an alarm system would be for the zombie apocalypse. Your safe house will have guards on duty 24×7, but even the best guards will mess up at some point. Falling asleep on the job, or just not paying enough attention could put your group at risk. The having a security system to back them up would be invaluable.

There are some major challenges to the traditional security system that make it impractical to use. Most systems require professional installation, and constant power sources. Not to mention they are permanent, so if you have to leave you also have to abandon the equipment.

All three of these problems are mitigated with the SimpliSafe system. The equipment is easy to install and does not require connection to interior wiring. Instead, the sensors operate on a cellular network, so you simply have to stick the sensors in place and your set. The sensors and alarm all run off of lithium batteries with a 5 year life, ensuring longevity to your investment. And because there are no wires required, if you have to leave you can simply take the equipment with you.

There are some modifications that would need to be made to use the SimpliSafe system during a zombie apocalypse. My first recommendation is to muffle the alarm so the sound is only loud enough to alert your team. This way you won’t attract more zombies.  SimpliSafe also provides a silent alarm option that sends a signal to your cell phone if monitoring services are still available.

Other modifications I have requested from the SimpliSafe team include a system that uses radio signals as opposed to cell phone, in case cell phone networks go down. Another useful item would be motion sensors that function well outdoors.

I recommend checking out the SimpliSafe website to look into the system yourself. If you have questions I can attest that their service team is more than helpful and friendly in answering any of your questions (I asked some myself to write this blog). If you’re skeptical about the system and how well it works, don’t take my word for it, check out these reviews from actual customers and see how much they love their systems.

If you want to chime in on this topic leave comments in the comment section below. Don’t forget to check out our Facebook, and Google + pages for more zombie goodness.

Zombie Minifigs!

March 27th, 2013 | by Penguin Prince
Posted In: Blog

Remember a while ago when I reported that a certain children’s block company refused to create a replica of the Winchester Pub from Shawn of the Dead? Although that company will not be named in this post, let’s call them “Overly Priced Blocks R Us,” I have found a company that has made my dreams come a little bit closer to reality.

Citizen Brick is a Minifig fabricator out of Chicago that makes short run toys that are compatible with Overly Priced Blocks R Us. And they have taken up our plight brother’s and sisters. I can honestly say that these are the toys my childhood was missing.

So many choices, so very few zombie minifig’s to decapitate. {1}

Although they don’t have Shawn of the dead, they certainly have zombies gruesome enough to be cool. And would you just take a look at that Zombie Hunting Enthusiast? Nothing says bad ass zombie hunter more than a crossbow and a goatee. Now only if I could place why he looks so familiar?

I know where I saw him now! Must have been that Harley Davidson convention I was at last week! {2}

Oh and back to that whole Winchester Pub problem (or lack thereof). If you head on over to their website (citizenbrick.com) they have that covered too. I was most excited to find out that they have custom printing available. Now I’m sure you would have to do some negotiating to get them to design a whole playset, but let’s say you needed zombie heads that look suspiciously like the latest bad guy that was turned into a zombie on that popular tv show everyone is watching. These are your guys! You know, so you can have your newly acquired Zombie Hunting Enthusiast stab it through the skull 6-8 times then cry like a girl.

Not only do they do Minifigs, but check out their line of custom blocks. And if they don’t have your “If I only had a Brain” plate that you wanted, you can request it! {3}

Isn’t imagination fun?

Zombie Current Events – 3/22/13

March 22nd, 2013 | by Penguin Prince
Posted In: Blog

Zombie current events this week are brought to you by the letter B. Also by the letters R, A, I, N, and the letter S. Current Events are also brought to you by the number 42.

This week I’m breaking a bunch of rules for all the right reasons. Hopefully we will find some type of mind sucking slug to give you nightmares next week.

Do you have $73? Do you live in Miami? And are you in relatively good physical shape? Yes, Yes, and Sort of? Well check this out. A Miami business is bringing you a live action role playing experience based of mechanics of video games. Their games will be put to theatrical music that changes based on setting and actions, you can save your game (use the save point to respon), and purchase upgrades and bonuses just like video games. And also just like video games they are going to get you to come back for more by offering you new scenarios to play every few months. You know my sister’s moving to Miami… maybe I should be sure to stop by and check on her every once in a while… Check out www.zombie-outbreak.com

May 4th is the new date set for the dead to walk the earth. Ok that’s an exaggeration. A WORLD WIDE Zombie Pub Crawl is being organized and they want to set a record for synchronized zombie pub crawls and participants. Want to participate? Join their Facebook and visit thezompocalypse.com for a city near you!

Finally I would like to point out that an REI Store decided to have a disaster preparedness class based off of zombies. This comes after a couple of articles I have put up referencing REI, their website, and how cool there store is for zombie prep. Coincidence? Most likely. I’m just saying that IF they pulled the idea off my blog I wouldn’t mind a www.thedeadfuture.com thank you on the REI website. All joking aside, it’s cool that they can do this and I hope they had a lot of fun!

That’s all for Zombie Current Events! If you have an event you would like to see featured, email me at penguinprince@grimcrew.com! Check out our Facebook, and Google + pages for more zombie goodness in between posts! Be safe and I’ll see you Monday.

The real reason we are fascinated with zombies.

March 18th, 2013 | by Penguin Prince
Posted In: Blog

I read an article yesterday that blew my mind and I want to share it with you. I summarizes it below, but I encourage you to read original, because it’s FACINATING.

How Do Zombies Help Us Cope With The Future by Angela Becerra Vidergar

(Summarized by Penguin Prince)

In the last century, events happened that shape the way we see, think, and feel about apocalyptic situations.  Events like the world wars, the nuking of Hiroshima & Nagasaki, the Holocaust, etc., all have helped change our fears. Instead of worrying about a spiritual day of reckoning, we worry about war, disease, nuclear fallout, etc.

OK this pic is actually from the movie Gorjira, but it illustrates my point none the less. {1}

Even productive advancements have shaped these fears. TV, movies, air travel, and the internet have changed our way of thinking. Disease can now travel from continent to continent with the simple purchase of a plane ticket. We see ideas spread faster through the internet, movies, and TV. This helps us as a society build similar ideas to one another.

Zombies are a form of entertainment, but they also create a world that represents these fears. This pretend world allows us to substitute ourselves for characters that go through unthinkable situations and lets us explore sides of humanity that we normally avoid. Could you kill your mother if she got infected? Would you take someone’s life if they were threatening you? We get to reflect on tough situations and make decisions, preparing us for what may lie ahead.

Zombies are a safe way to play these “what if” games, and they get you to think about survival. Nuclear war may too unpleasant to consider but zombies are fun. That is why we are fascinated by them.

Why Zombies? Because they are the new acceptable form of D & D, that’s why. Did I mention they also kick ass? That too. {2}

Let me know what you think! Leave comments in the comment section below, or email me at penguinprince@grimcrew.com. Don’t forget to check out our Facebook, and Google + pages for more zombie goodness. As always be safe and I’ll see you Wednesday for more zombie goodness!
