Has anyone ever asked themselves why do zombies like brains so much? I personally don’t think it’s because of the flavor. Probably more of the consistency. We know that Zombies are not picky as to what they will eat off of a human, but brains are really what drive them. The rest of the human body is tough, and a lot of trouble to chew through as your teeth and jaw are literally rotting off your face. However the brain is soft, and mushy. It is like a boiled egg compared to the rest of the body. It is harder to get though. It is the most well protected organ in our bodies because it is surrounded almost completely by bone. Yep our brains are pretty special.
The Wellcome Collection thinks so too. The Wellcome Collection is a free museum in London that plays host to all kinds of curious exhibits to push our brains out of the normal everyday train of thought and into a world where curiosity is encouraged for the sake of knowledge. Mainly dealing with exhibits on medicine and science, their exhibits are altogether fascinating.

This preserved brain was actually found in the temple of Mentuhotep II at Deir el-Bahari. At a time where Egyptians most often discarded the brain, this was a rare find.{1}
And wouldn’t you know their exhibit that started March 29th and will be going on till June 17 is the subject of Brains: The Mind as Matter. What I like about this exhibit is the fact that they are not looking at the brain for its function, but asking what medicine has done to and for the brain in order to advance our knowledge on how it works. It is truly fascinating to find out what we have done to the brain over the years.
In the exhibit you will be able to see brain specimens, pictures and diagrams of the brain, and even some artwork from those who have donated their brain to science! On the website itself you can see a human brain in a 360 degree view, see what it takes to dissect a brain, find out about the tours of the exhibit, and view the extensive image galleries featuring the science of the brain. There is even a game you can play based on making as large of a neuron as you can. After you have built your neuron, the game will give you an opportunity to find out more about the neuron you have built by directing you to a Wikipedia page dedicated to that type of neuron.
The deeper I dive into this the more fascinated I become. England is becoming one of the world’s biggest entertainers for zombie enthusiasts with the variety of zombie events they have going on. And this is another one to mark on the list as a must see for anyone who is interested in the brain and the science that helps us understand it. You can visit the website for the exhibit at http://www.wellcomecollection.org/whats-on/exhibitions/brains.aspx.

If you follow us on Facebook and Google +, you know that I have said several times that my favorite blogs to do are the melee weapon blogs. I say this because I feel like they are the most creative ones I do. A lot of thought goes into those blogs, from what random objects you can use as weapons, to how to use them. I get to do some neat stuff with these blogs including trying to determine if the object is deadly enough to be able to kill a zombie, and if I can I use math to show that, I do. Another reason I think I enjoy those blogs so much is because when it comes down to it, you will probably have to fight hand to hand at some point, so I use this blog as a mental exercise so that if the time ever comes, I won’t ever get caught without a weapon. When you know how to use everything to your advantage, you will never lose the high ground.
Well for my Zombie Website of the Month I have picked Zombie Go Boom. Now if you have already clicked that link you will notice that it goes to their YouTube Chanel, so this is a bending of the “rules” for Website of the Month, but after you look through their videos you will see why this is well deserved. To be honest, they are one of the best zombie survival channels out there. Not only do they provide useful information with a realistic look at weapons, but they do it in an entertaining way. Too often have the videos I’ve seen been misinforming, or boring, or over the top. We’ll if Zombie Go Boom is a little over the top, at least it’s well done.
The main content of Zombie Go Boom is based around testing various melee weapons to see if they are reliable enough to be used in a zombie fighting situation. Sure, that spiked baseball bat will probably beat in that zombie skull, but what are the hazards of using it? Could another baseball bat be better? These are the questions that Zombie Go Boom answers. How may you ask? Well I’m glad you asked. By using materials that are scientifically proven to be the same density and consistency of the human skull (and flesh as needed), and then smashing the hell out of it in front of a slow motion camera! Nothing is more satisfying than seeing simulated zombie brains go splat over and over again in slow-mo! And unlike my blog where everything is kind of speculated (although still useful) these guys are able to get their hands on some bad ass weapons and actually use them!
But this is not all. Zombie Go Boom is also host to survivor video posts as well. So if you ever wanted to find out how to make your MRE (save you a load of money), this is the place. Or maybe you would like to find out how to sharpen your knifes. They cover that too! Something I found helpful was their fighting technique videos. These videos show some advanced techniques that you could use against a zombie (or any other attacker really) with some of the weapons that they test. I personally recommend however that before you attempt these tactics, that you find an instructor who knows how to use weapons to teach you how to practice these techniques safely. Never use them on a live human or animal unless of course your life is in danger. You should practice these techniques in a safe environment however as attempting to use advanced tactics without proper training can put you in danger or cause you to hurt yourself. Don’t be the one to say you weren’t fighting the good fight because you took a tomahawk to the knee.
In conclusion, I highly recommend Zombie Go Boom for entertainment and information. If you have extra time to kill, peruse the YouTube Chanel and click some “like” buttons! You can also visit them on Facebook.

A lot of people claim to love zombies. I love zombies with almost reckless abandon. And I try to promote the zombie agenda every chance I get. But really what I do with this blog pails in comparison to what Byron Rempel does on an almost daily basis.
If Byron’s name sounds familiar, it’s because you may have seen him talked about during our Halloween special. And if you have been on Google + at all, you have probably seen one or two of his zombie creations pop up across your news feed.
Now if you go to Byron’s website you probably won’t see much. It is fairly new, but you can see some of his amazing transformations. Byron takes Google + members and turns them into zombies. Yes you can probably go to any comic convention and commission an artist to draw you as a zombie (I actually recommend this, support your local artists!) but Byron works mainly in the not so easy to use medium of watercolor, not to mention the occasional marker, finger paint, bug guts, and even real blood. This can give his work a kind of surreal look that’s very befitting of the entire zombie condition. In a chat I had with him last night he reveled to me that one day he hopes to complete a project using just blood. Now that will be something to see!
The reason I’m writing about Byron’s work today is I wanted to bring awareness to the ambitious project he’s working on currently. Byron has embarked on a quest he calls the 1000 Zombies Project, where he will take the likeness of 1000 people and zombify them. Not only is he working towards a such a large work load but his project has a twist. The subject matter of every one of his works will be chosen by Google + users. According to Byron “This is a publicly funded and directed project.” He also goes on to say “…for example – if you wanted the Pope zombified, or Jesus, no problem. Maybe you want Hulk Hogan done just for shits and giggles, or a candid shot of your neighbor that you hate – go for it. You fund it, I’ll do it. Just no racism, hate or anything really stupid… I’ll mess up your boss for just 10 bucks!”
In addition to the no hate or racism exceptions Byron has also ruled out pornography for this project. But when he says you can pick any subject for his experiment, he means it. One recent commission requested that both he and his dog get the zombie touch. He has even done one of a fan and her child for a contest he did, although according to his posts he was really sorry for the child. You can also pick incidentals such as skin colors, and amount of blood and gore.
The minimum donation amount for a spot of the coveted 1000 is $10, but according to his website he will gladly accept larger donations. Donations go toward buying the supplies needed for the project as well as a portion of his living expenses as he has devoted all his time on this project and will not be accepting other commissions until this one is complete. If you would like to commission a zombie please see his website for instructions on how to donate via PayPal or money order.
If you would like to follow Byron and his project on Google + you can add him to your circles using this link. Don’t forget to support him by +1ing his pictures and sharing them when you can.

Zombie Website of the Month: www.zombieplace.com
February 3rd, 2012 | by Penguin PrinceLooking through the old posts I couldn’t help be nowticed that a few of their posts and a few posts that I have done seem very similar in content. For instance on January 8th of this year they did a post on Zombie targets. I did a post on the very next day on zombie targets myself. Uncanny! While my post referenced a specific manufacturer, www.thezombieplace.com showed us targets from many different manufactures provided by amazon.com. I’m not trying to compare our junk here. What I am trying to say is that even though some of the content may over lap it is always useful to check the same subject out from different points of view. The targets shown by thezombieplace were a bit cheaper in price, so if you purchased based off my recommendation alone, you would have maybe wasted money.
Something I like about the site is the list section they have to the right on their main page. Here you can see a comprehensive list of movies, books, games, comic books, and other media related to zombies. If you are looking for a new book to read, you could search this section to find one that may not be on your list. This will be a helpful tool for anyone looking to get gifts for a zombie enthusiast, or just looking for something new for themselves.
My only critique of the site would be that I noticed some of the articles don’t have sources. For instance I must thank them for showing me the Mossberg 500 Pump-Action Shotgun, but I have to ask… “Where can I get one?” After a short search of their site I believe that that particular shot gun has been modified as I can not find it on the Mossberg website (www.mossberg.com) A mention that this particular model was modified would have saved me the trouble of searching.
So for the zombie enthusiast this website is a great read during work breaks or lunch. I don’t recognize a schedule to their posts however you should check back at least once a week for new content.
