Imagine a world where you can build anything you wish. What would you build? A sphinx? A dungeon? A full scale model of the starship Enterprise? Well you can build all that and more in Minecraft. Minecraft is a 3D adventure game where there are no goals, no quests, and no leveling. There are achievements, but not many and these are just to guide you along as to what can be done and more to introduce you to the basics of crafting than anything else. So what’s the fun of it? If you can’t level where does the fun come in? It’s true there is no quests or side quests, or grinding for XP, but because these elements have been removed from the game, it has made playing this game a whole lot more fun. You set your own goals and tasks to do. Maybe you want to make yourself a diamond plate armor set… have fun searching for those rare gems! What about building a giant Snoopy head? Go right ahead. Maybe you just want to build a defensive structure that the damn zombies and creepers won’t blow up. Wait! Was that the tie in I needed to post this to this blog? I think it was.
A foe who needs no introduction.
So what’s the point in having monsters trying to kill you if you don’t get XP for killing them? Well to make the game interesting of course. You thought it would be easy to build a replica of Skull Castel? Think again. You see there are different monsters out there ready to mess your shit up. Literally. At night monsters spawn where your character has explored that there is no light. Some of the less harmless ones, the zombies for instance, burn when the sun comes out. Then there are the skeletons, which again burn when the sun comes out, but they can shoot arrows to kill you. Next along the annoyance chain are the spiders. They are giant and they want to eat you. They don’t die in the sunlight and can jump over walls and fences. Then you got your Spider Jockeys. Because big freaken spiders weren’t enough, now you have skeletons riding on their backs shooting arrows at you. Then there’s the scourge of the game, at least for me. The creepers. These assholes of the Minecraft universe do not die in the sunlight, and they come at you as soon as they spot you. Once they get close to you, they explode. That’s right walking suicide bombers determined to kill you. Now the good news is with full health, you can survive a creeper attack; however terrain near you gets blown up too. So if one blows up near something your building, you have to waste time in repairing it. Dispense of them with bows and arrows in order to keep them at bay, but, if you are crafty enough, lure them down to where you’re trying mine, and cause them to detonate. They will clear a good portion for you and you reap the rewards of the mined materials.
I have so far fended off creeper attacks by building a fence around my structure and surrounding it with torches to prevent them from spawning near my home. I also built a trench around the structure so that if they wander close to the house I can trap them in the trench and pick them off at a safe distance without them being able to get to me. Others are cleverer with their defenses. By building in the air, spawned monsters will not be able to spawn close to your home, or jump over your fence for that matter. So a floating fortress is a prized accomplishment.
You can play this game in solo mode, however for more fun, play with friends in Multiplayer. My friends and I have obtained a private server so that outsiders won’t mess with our structures. A private server will also give you greater control of the game. An accomplished administrator can program the game with special rules, different items, and even place spawners wherever they feel will make the game more interesting. In fact our Deadministrator is holding my structures under threat of surrounding it with zombie and creeper spawners if I didn’t write this article about his favorite game.
Purchase of the game is made solely online at www.minecraft.net. The sooner you buy it the cheaper it will be. Because the game is still in beta, the developer is offering a discount. But the discount will dwindle as the game becomes more complete. The thing is this game is already great without it being finished, so I wouldn’t wait if I were you.
