Zombie Current Events 8/3/12

It seems that the zombie attacks that dominated the news articles just a month ago have finally subsided. After all the speculation and the conspiracy theories, we are starting to see a resurgence of the zombie news that is of the less violent kind.

First a follow up on a story I had reported at the beginning of this year. I had talked about a zombie parasite that effected bees in California. Well it looks like the parasite is spreading and scientists are worried that it will soon reach Oregon. They are asking the help of the public to track down this bee epidemic by collecting samples of possibly infected bees, and submitting pictures to www.zombeewatch.org. (be sure to visit the referenced sites for more info!)

More on the science front with a pair of neuroscientists who want to map out the zombie brain. Bradley Voytek and Timothy Verstynen have taken the symptoms of the zombie condition and have come up with reasons for the various ailments that coincide with the condition of the human brain. The pair hope that by doing their work, they can use it as an introduction too to would be neuroscientists and others to get more involved with science and biology. You’ve got me hooked guys, let me know when you finish, I would love to feature a story on this blog!

From the Geeky to the super cute, we travel to Japan to see an international take at zombie advertising. It’s not what you expect. It seems that the marketing brains (ha!) behind Kagawa have come up with a vegan zombie mascot that’s so kawii. “Udon No” doesn’t want your brains. Instead all he can think of is delicious Udon noodles. If you have never had udon, maybe this cute guy will change your mind. Not only are they delicious, but with a zombie mascot like this, how could you possibly say no? That would be like trying to deny the Maggie Moo cow or even that cute actress they have playing Wendy in the Wendy’s commercials. Damn now I’m hungry.

“Undoooooonnnnnn” {2}

DuPont Washington has the right idea on fighting those that would trounce on a soldier’s sacrifice in the name of “God.” When Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka Kansas made clear their intentions of protesting at the funeral of a fallen soldier in this proud town, the people of DuPont did the only rational thing they could do. Dress up as zombies and form a counter protest. Zombie protesters were joined by “motorcyclists, veterans, moms of serving soldiers, hot rod drivers and groups bearing the flags of the nation and its armed forces branches.” According to the source article, the 8 protestors from the church could not even be heard among construction equipment and angry honking drivers who showed their displeasure of the questionable protest. Zombies of DuPont… fist bump.

If your undead and you need some extra cash, one way to cash in is to audition for a part at a local amusement park. As October approaches, many amusement parks will begin their transformations to fear centers for their Halloween festivities. It seems that Six Flags in New Jersey is not shy for asking for the help either. If you want to work as the walking dead it looks like you must be at least 16 years old, and pass a few auditions to be considered. But if you succeed, it will be the most rewarding $9 an hour you will ever earn.

That’s all for the zombie news of the week. Don’t forget that if you find a zombie current event you would like to share, email me at penguinprince@grimcrew.com. You can also follow Dead Future on Facebook and Google +. You can also follow me on Twitter and Google +.
