1 item.

Jakpaking it.

As you may know by now I’m am a little obsessed with being prepared for the zombie apocalypse. Having everything ready for the end of days is essential if you want to survive. So I am constantly looking for things to improve my Bug Out Bag so that when it’s time to run its light and functional.

Some friends of mine on Google + pointed out one such product that I practically went gaga over. I’m a big fan of multipurpose items. Last year I reported on a table the transformed into a bat and shield. Now we have found another such object that might be just as exciting. Maybe.

The Jakpak is a revolutionary design for a coat. Its water proof and lots of pockets to store the extra parts of the jacket to become a tent.

If you did a double take on that last sentence as well don’t worry you read that right. A jacket that becomes a one man sleeping tent. Think of the implications of such a devise. You now would have extra room in your bug out bag as your tent would be worn to keep the sun and rain off of you. It would save you weight in the pack because now you don’t have to carry two separate items for the purposes. You would think this would be the ideal item for the zombie invasion. At least I thought so at first.

Don’t get me wrong, this tent would be great for hikers but some design features that help make this tent water proof prevent it from being ideal for zombie situations. The first thing that I saw was that the feet of the wearer go into a sleeve. If you were to have to get up in the middle of the night due to a zombie attack, you would first have to struggle to get your feet out of the sleeve before you could run or fight. Being tripped up on this sleeve would not be a fun way to die.

The next design flaw that I saw was the detachable tent portion. Not having slept in one myself I wonder how hard it would be to throw that piece off if you needed to get up quickly? With all the mesh lining designed to keep bugs from getting in the “tent”, I would say you would run a good chance of getting tangled up in the net before you threw off the tent. That would make you nothing more than a nylon lined burrito.

One may argue that with any normal one man tent you would fall prey to these same design flaws. It would still be inconvenient to get out of in case you had to run. It would still be likely for someone to get tangled up in if they panicked and had to try to get out quickly. And that is why I’m not ruling the Jacpak out completely for your Bug Out Bag needs. If you trained with the Jacpak on how to get in and out of it quickly, you may be able to make it work for you. The foot sack does allow for you to get your feet out of it so that you could walk or run with it on if necessary. And if you slept with your hands folded around your chest or near your head, you could learn to push from the top of the tent instead of staring around the netting to throw it off of you. And once you have gotten rid of those two obstacles the Jakpak still makes a waterproof jacket to keep you dry, or keep the zombie blood off you.
